Technical Info[]

Staining Pattern[]

Expression in Normal Tissues[]

  • Vascular endothelium
  • Dermal spindle cells
  • Adventitial spindle cells (around cutaneous adnexal structures such as hair follicles, sweat ducts, etc).

Expression in Neoplastic Entities[]

Benign[]
Tumor name % Positive Staining Number of Cases
Benign vascular tumors (hemangiomas, etc)
Spindle cell / pleomorphic lipoma
Mammary-type myofibroblastoma
Neurofibroma
Perineurioma
Schwannoma
Cellular angiofibroma (aka so-called angiomyofibroblastoma-like tumor of the male genital tract)
Intermediate/Uncertain Malignant Potential[]
Tumor name % Positive Staining Number of Cases
Epithelioid Hemangioendothelioma
Kaposiform Hemangioendothelioma
Dabska Hemangioendothelioma
Solitary fibrous tumor 100%[1] 16/16[1]
Malignant[]
Tumor name % Positive Staining Number of Cases
Kaposi sarcoma
Angiosarcoma
Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP)
Well differentiated liposarcoma
Epithelioid sarcoma (classic and proximal type)

Expression in Non-Neoplastic Entities[]

Practical Uses / Panels[]

  • Can be used to differentiate Solitary Fibrous Tumor (CD34+) from Desmoplastic Mesothelioma (CD34-)[2]
  • Neurofibroma vs. Desmoplastic Melanoma[3]

Pertinent Negatives[]

This antigen is typically NOT expressed by the following entities:

Common Pitfalls[]

  • Fibrous histiocytoma (dermatofibroma) may occasional express CD34. Also, they often show enhanced CD34 expression at periphery of the lesion that may be mistaken for actual CD34 staining.
