Technical InfoEdit

Staining PatternEdit

  • Nuclear and cytoplasmic staining

Expression in Normal TissuesEdit

  • Mesothelial cells
  • Ovarian sex cord stromal tissue[1]
  • Neural tissue[1]
  • Adrenal cortex[1]

Expression in Neoplastic EntitiesEdit

Expression in Neoplastic EntitiesEdit

BenignEdit
Tumor name % Positive Staining (Sensitivity) Number of Cases Specificity Comments
Adrenal cortical adenoma: 100%[1] 16/16[1]

Intermediate/Uncertain Malignant PotentialEdit
Tumor name % Positive Staining (Sensitivity) Number of Cases Specificity Comments
Paraganglioma 25%[1] 5/20[1]

MalignantEdit
Tumor name % Positive Staining (Sensitivity) Number of Cases Specificity Comments
Mesothelioma 100%[2] 60/60[2]
Adrenal cortical carcinoma 92%[1] 11/12[1]

Expression in Non-Neoplastic EntitiesEdit

Pertinent NegativesEdit

  • Adrenal medulla[1]
  • Pheochromocytoma: 0% (20/20)[1]

Practical Uses / PanelsEdit

  • Can be used with WT-1 and cytokeratin 5/6 to differentiate epithelioid mesothelioma (positive for all 3 markers) from pulmonary adenocarcinoma (negative for all 3 markers)[2]
  • Can be used in differentiating tumors of adrenocortical origin (calretinin positive) from those of adrenal medullary origin (calretinin negative)[1]
