Essential steps in decalcification:

1- Select the bony tissue for processing

2- fix in neutral buffered formalin or Helly's solution or as indicated in the lab

3- Wash or clear residual fixative and transmit to the decalcification solution with frequent changes till testing free of calcium as indicated (X ray, amoniumoxalate & amonium hydroxide method or other)

"☀•Thorough washing of the tissue between formalin containing fixatives and RDO (hydrochlorid acid) treatment is critical since formalin and hydrochloric acid combined together give off a carcinogenic gas, namely bischloromethyl ether."
