Expression in Non-Neoplastic EntitiesEdit

Pertinent NegativesEdit

This antigen is typically NOT expressed by the following entities:

  • Non-neoplastic liver (cirrhotic and non-cirrhotic)

Practical Uses / PanelsEdit

  • Glypican-3 is useful when positive (confirming hepatocellular carcinoma[HCC]) in liver biopsies. However, due to low sensitivity, absence of glypican-3 does not exclude HCC.

Common PitfallsEdit

  • Focal or negative staining does not exclude hepatocellular carcinoma on liver biopsies.
