These specimens are often removed for stones and sialadenitis.
- Describe size in three dimensions, shape (round/ovoid/irregular/distorted), color (pink/tan/hemorrhagic) and firmness (firm/soft/heterogeneous).
- Ink the specimen (just in case the pre-op diagnosis is incorrect or an occult tumor is found).
- Section by breadloafing specimen and pay close attention for stones and small gravelly sludge.
- Note color, texture and firmness on cut section.
3-4 representative sections are sufficient. Request 1 H&E level per block.
