This one year ACGME-accredited program is designed to provide comprehensive training in diagnostic cytopathology, particularly the immediate evaluation, triage and final diagnosis of fine needle aspirations (FNA’s). The cytology laboratory evaluates approximately 25000 gynecologic and 5000 non-gynecologic specimens of which 2000 are FNA’s per year. The fellow will become proficient in laboratory management, diagnostics; including the performance and interpretation of FNA’s and new technologies; including the ThinPrep Imaging System, HPV-DNA testing, and medical informatics. The cytopathology section utilizes video streaming from remote locations for immediate evaluation of FNA’s. This cutting edge experience provides fellows with comprehensive training in the new technologies benefiting cytopathology today. The department has a strong academic mission, and provides opportunities for cytology-based research, including molecular diagnostics. The fellow will participate in the education of residents and medical students on cytology rotations. Educational opportunities exist for rotation at the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (including evaluating its large volume of gynecologic specimens, spending time in the cytogenetics laboratory, and teaching in the School of Cytotechnology). The fellow is expected to complete a research project for publication. Upon completion, the fellow will be prepared to direct a university or community-based practice cytopathology laboratory.
Requirements: Applicants must be AP or AP/CP Board eligible or board certified.
Stipends: Commensurate with the year of postgraduate training.

Hematopathology Fellowship[]

(1 position)

Length:1 year

Dr. Catherine Leith, Director

This ACGME accredited fellowship provides subspecialty training in hematopathology to academically oriented pathologists. An experienced faculty and affiliation with a major university medical school provide trainees with exposure to the complexities and richness of a full service referral and research institution. In addition, large bone marrow transplantation and hematology programs and a major clinical cancer center provide opportunities and challenges to develop a solid foundation in the fundamentals and practice of hematopathology. The fellowship offers intensive experience in:

  1. morphologic evaluation of lymphoid tissues, bone marrow biopsies, and bone marrow aspirates
  2. cell surface antigen analysis of lymphomas and leukemia’s by flow cytometry and immunohistochemical techniques
  3. interpretation of molecular diagnostic data
  4. cytogenetics, including FISH
  5. analysis of problems in coagulation medicine

Each fellow participates in a related research project. Fellows are accepted for a minimum of one year and a second year of training is offered and encouraged.

We are no longer accepting applications for 2016-2017, but will be accepting them for 2017-2018 this fall.

Requirements: Board-eligible or certified in AP or AP/CP
Stipends: Commensurate with year of postgraduate training. There is a $500 book allowance and $1500 for travel to attend educational/national meetings.
